Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate U.S. import duties with TariffDecoder?
Use the tool in Single or Multi mode:Single: Enter an HTS code (8–10 digits), select a country of origin, enter a shipment value, and set steel content and USMCA status if prompted. TariffDecoder calculates the duty percent and dollars amount.Multi: Upload a .csv or .xlsx spreadsheet with your HTS codes and countries of origin. You may also include steel content and item references. The tool returns structured tariff results row by row. What tariff types are included?
We calculate:- MFN duty rate from the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTSUS)
- Section 201 safeguard tariffs
- Section 301 tariffs (Lists 1–4B, including exclusions and suspensions)
- Section 232 tariffs (steel/aluminum), including logic for partial steel content
- Reciprocal duties (e.g., 10% on non-steel goods from certain countries)
- IEEPA (Fentanyl-related) tariffs
- USMCA eligibility logic (based on your entry)Where does your tariff data come from?
Our data is sourced from:- Official HTS releases from the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC)
- Executive Orders and Federal Register notices
- USTR announcements and tariff lists
- CBP guidance for preference programs like USMCAHow often is the tariff data updated?
We monitor U.S. trade policy changes continuously and update the app shortly after any changes take legal effect (e.g., rate updates, exclusions, expirations).Do I need a 10-digit HTS code?
We recommend the full 10-digit HTS code for precise results. However, the app accepts 8-digit codes when 10-digit-level data is unavailable or not required for specific tariff programs.Does the app check for trade agreement eligibility?
Yes. For Canada and Mexico, the app prompts for USMCA eligibility and applies zero-duty rates where applicable. USMCA logic is built in and shown clearly in the results. What’s the difference between Single and Multi tools?
Single: For checking one item at a time, with dollar value calculations.Multi: For uploading and analyzing multiple items in bulk. Results include all applicable tariffs per row, and the tool handles partial steel content logic, exclusions, and stacking. Is there a download feature?
Yes. After uploading a file in Multi mode, you can download the full tariff results in .csv format—perfect for record keeping or landed cost modeling. Are anti-dumping or countervailing duties (AD/CVD) included?
No. These are not included in the calculated results. Are there any limitations?
Yes. We aim to be transparent about what the app doesn’t do:- No full landed cost: We do not include freight, brokerage, or other costs beyond duties.
- No Harbor Maintenance Fee (HMF) or Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF) calculations.
- No AD/CVD enforcement: These duties require scope analysis beyond the HTS code.
- No FTZ or Chapter 98/99 full coverage: These programs are complex and not fully supported.
- No support for GRI 1 sets, watches/clocks, or privileged claim logic.
- No Russia-specific 232 rates (e.g., 200% duty on aluminum).
- Entry date logic not yet implemented: We assume today's effective rates.
